Olympique Lyonnais has completed the signing of talented English midfielder Tyler Morton from Liverpool, marking a significant addition to their squad ahead of the upcoming Ligue 1 season. The 22-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract with the French side, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2030.
The deal, reportedly worth €10 million upfront with an additional €5 million in potential bonuses, also includes a 20% sell-on clause in favor of Liverpool should Morton be sold in the future.
Morton’s journey began in Liverpool’s academy, which he joined at the age of seven. Known for his intelligence on the ball and ability to control the tempo of a match, he steadily rose through the ranks and made his senior debut in 2021 under then-manager Jürgen Klopp. However, consistent first-team opportunities proved difficult to come by. Over his time with the Reds, Morton made just 14 senior appearances, including five last season—none of which were in the Premier League.
To gain valuable experience, Morton was loaned out to the Championship for two consecutive seasons. He featured in 46 matches for Blackburn Rovers in the 2022–2023 campaign and followed up with another solid spell at Hull City, making 41 appearances during the 2023–2024 season.
His development continued on the international stage as well. A key member of England’s under-21 squad, Morton helped the team secure the UEFA U21 European Championship title this summer. He even played a decisive role in the final, providing the assist for the winning goal against Germany in extra time.
Lyon, who faced financial challenges earlier this year and were temporarily relegated to Ligue 2 before successfully appealing the decision, see Morton as a long-term investment in rebuilding their squad. He becomes their fourth summer signing, joining Afonso Moreira, Ruben Kluivert, and Pavel Šulc.
Back in England, Liverpool have undergone a squad transformation under new manager Arne Slot following their Premier League title win in the 2024–25 season. With over £250 million already spent on new signings, the club is also balancing its finances by moving on academy graduates like Morton and defender Jarrell Quansah, who recently joined Bayer Leverkusen in a £35 million deal. These moves help the club remain compliant with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
For Lyon, the acquisition of Morton signals ambition and a desire to return to the top of French football. For Morton, it offers a fresh start and a chance to become a regular starter at a club known for nurturing talent.
