Alexander Isak has thrown his Newcastle United future into chaos after releasing a strongly worded statement accusing the club of breaking promises made to him behind closed doors.
The Swedish striker, who is Liverpool’s top transfer target this summer, has openly declared that his relationship with Newcastle “cannot continue” due to what he described as misleading behaviour from the club’s hierarchy.
Speaking publicly for the first time about the saga, Isak said:
“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.
The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.
When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interest of everyone, not just myself.”
No Show at PFA Awards
The 25-year-old was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25, but notably skipped Tuesday night’s awards ceremony in Manchester. Instead, he chose to make his statement public at the same time as the event, signalling how fractured his ties with Newcastle have become.
Isak took the opportunity to thank his teammates and the Newcastle fans, but his absence from the ceremony underlined the seriousness of the standoff.
Liverpool Ready to Act
Liverpool had a £110m bid for Isak rejected earlier this month but are expected to return with an improved offer before the transfer deadline on September 1. With Darwin Núñez moving to Al Hilal and Luis Díaz joining Bayern Munich, Arne Slot is keen to reinforce his frontline.
Isak, widely admired for his versatility and work rate, has emerged as the Reds’ prime target to complement new signing Hugo Ekitike and star man Mohamed Salah.

Newcastle’s Striker Search
Newcastle now face the difficult task of replacing their star forward in a short window of time. Eddie Howe’s side have already explored moves for Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Šeško, Liam Delap and João Pedro, but with no success so far.
Currently, they are pursuing Brentford’s Yoane Wissa — who has gone on strike to force a transfer — as well as Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Wolves’ Jørgen Strand Larsen.
What Happens Next
- Liverpool’s Second Bid: Will they push closer to Newcastle’s valuation before September 1?
 - Newcastle’s Replacement Hunt: Can Howe land a forward quickly enough to allow Isak to leave?
 - Isak’s Stance: The striker has made it clear he will not back down, even at the cost of missing key events.

With less than two weeks left in the window, the Isak saga promises to be one of the defining transfer stories of the summer. For Liverpool, this could be the move that completes their attack; for Newcastle, it’s about salvaging trust and stability in a squad on edge.
