Newcastle increases Liverpool’s hopes on the signing of Alexander Isak

Newcastle United have agreed a blockbuster deal to sign Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade, with the 23-year-old German international set to undergo his medical after bidding farewell to his teammates. Standing at 6ft 6ins, Woltemade is one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards, having scored 17 goals in 33 matches last season and finishing as top scorer at the U21 European Championship this summer with six goals in five games.

The reported package is worth between €85–90 million (£73–78m) plus add-ons, making him one of the most expensive signings in Newcastle’s history. He will become the latest addition to Eddie Howe’s squad after the arrivals of Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale, as the Magpies prepare for another Champions League campaign against Europe’s elite, including Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Isak Domino Effect

Woltemade’s signing could have a major ripple effect — particularly for Liverpool.
For months, the Reds have pursued Newcastle’s star striker Alexander Isak, who has not trained or featured for the Magpies this season while making his desire to move to Anfield clear.

Liverpool saw an initial £110m offer rejected earlier in the summer, but sources suggest they are preparing a second bid worth around £120–130m, potentially setting a new British transfer record. Personal terms with the 25-year-old Swede are already believed to be agreed.

From Newcastle’s perspective, keeping both Woltemade and Isak would put them under pressure from the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, especially after their heavy summer spending. Despite public insistence that Isak is “not for sale,” insiders believe Woltemade’s arrival makes an exit for the Swede increasingly likely.

Breakdown in Relations at St James’ Park

The saga has been further fuelled by tension between Isak and Newcastle. Reports claim the striker has not spoken to manager Eddie Howe in over a week after posting a scathing statement on social media accusing the club of “breaking promises and damaging relationships.”

Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has personally intervened in attempts to convince Isak to stay, but the player remains firm in his wish to join Liverpool. Sources close to the negotiations suggest Newcastle’s hierarchy now recognize that a sale could be “in everyone’s best interests” if the right fee is secured.

What Next for Liverpool?

Liverpool, already boosted by the big-money arrival of Florian Wirtz, are looking to make Isak their marquee signing of the summer. The Swede would join an attacking line featuring Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Hugo Ekitike, adding both depth and star power.

In addition, the Reds are monitoring Marc Guéhi of Crystal Palace as they look to reinforce their defense. Palace’s involvement in the Europa Conference League had delayed talks, but with their place secured, a late-window exit for the England international is now possible.

The Bigger Picture

If completed, the double move — Woltemade to Newcastle and Isak to Liverpool — could shape the landscape of both clubs for years. For Liverpool, it would secure a world-class striker entering his peak, while for Newcastle, it could mark the start of a new era built around one of Germany’s brightest attacking talents.

With the transfer window closing on Monday night, the next few days promise to be decisive.

  1. Firstly, now Newcastle have signed a new striker, surely they’ll let go of Isak and also it goes without saying that Guehi from palace should be sold to Liverpool otherwise he will go for free next season anyway.
Secondly, although im a Liverpool supporter, the new utd signings are good but something isn’t working there. Adoring isn’t great as he doesn’t want to change his system so he won’t get the best from his players.
I’ve only ran amateur teams and I could do better. Spurs will do well but fall away later on in the season, city will be good at the end of the season as always and Arsenal will be up there, but Liverpool will win the league . Y.N.W.A.
