Alexander Isak to Liverpool closer than ever now

Liverpool’s long-running chase for Alexander Isak could finally reach its conclusion in the coming days, with reports suggesting a Premier League-record bid worth around £130 million is imminent. The Reds saw an initial £110m offer rejected earlier this month, but sources now believe Newcastle may be softening their stance following the signing of Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade.

The 25-year-old Swede has made no secret of his desire to join Liverpool, refusing to train with Eddie Howe’s side this summer and publicly accusing the club of breaking promises over his future. While Newcastle have insisted he is not for sale, the reality of profit and sustainability rules combined with growing dressing-room tensions may now force their hand.

Newcastle’s Summer Rebuild

Newcastle have invested heavily in reshaping their squad and forward line. The club confirmed Woltemade’s arrival in a deal worth £65m plus add-ons, a record fee for the Magpies and a signing that eclipses the amount they paid for Isak three years ago.

The towering German forward, who stands at 6ft 6ins, arrives after scoring 12 goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances last season and topping the charts at the U21 European Championship with six strikes in five matches. His signing follows the additions of Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, and Aaron Ramsdale, as Howe looks to balance the squad for a demanding season that includes a Champions League campaign.

Newcastle remain in talks for further reinforcements, including Jørgen Strand Larsen of Wolves and Yoane Wissa of Brentford. Club sources suggest that if two new strikers are signed before Monday night’s deadline, Isak will be allowed to leave.

A Sour Ending at St James’ Park

Relations between Isak and Newcastle supporters have soured in recent weeks. Once celebrated for helping end the club’s 70-year domestic trophy drought, he now finds himself criticized by sections of the fanbase for pushing to leave.

The Swede reportedly told the club hierarchy in a tense meeting that “he wants to leave,” and has since distanced himself from Howe and his teammates. Club chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has attempted to intervene personally, but Isak remains determined to secure his dream move to Anfield.

Liverpool’s Next Steps

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already added Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike to his squad this summer, but Isak is viewed as the final blockbuster signing to spearhead the Reds’ attack. The player is understood to have agreed personal terms, leaving only club-to-club negotiations to be finalized.

Transfer insiders, including respected journalist David Ornstein, report a “growing expectation” that Isak will become a Liverpool player before the deadline. ESPN’s Jan Aage Fjørtoft has gone further, suggesting the deal is “all but done.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool continue to monitor Marc Guéhi as a defensive target, with Crystal Palace potentially ready to sell following their Europa Conference League qualification.

Final Days of Drama

With just two-and-a-half days left in the transfer window, time is running out for both clubs. Newcastle’s capture of Woltemade may have unlocked the door, but until a second Liverpool bid lands on the table, the saga remains unresolved.

For Isak, this is the moment he has been waiting for: a chance to lead the line at Anfield and become the centerpiece of Liverpool’s title defense. For Newcastle, it could be the end of one era and the start of another, built around their towering new German forward.
